An interview with Dr. Cătălin Vlad Gican, orthopedic and trauma surgery specialist, about the HCS (Headless Compression Screws) implant used in fracture treatment.

Winter is fracture season. If you injure your musculoskeletal system and experience pain in the affected limb, it's best to immobilize the area and see a doctor as soon as possible.

We spoke with Dr. Cătălin Vlad Gican, a specialist in Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery, about an implant he uses frequently in fracture cases — the HCS (Headless Compression Screws) implant, which at the time was manufactured by DePuy Synthes and distributed in Romania by Ronda Medical.

Dr. Cătălin Vlad Gican has more than 10 years of experience in Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery and works with the Bucharest Clinical Emergency Hospital, Sanador Hospital, Medlife Orthopedics Hospital, and Centrokinetic Recovery Clinic. He has completed specialized training courses in nearly every European country, keeping him up to date with the latest innovative procedures in orthopedics and trauma surgery. He is an AO course graduate and has additional subspecialty training in sports traumatology.

Why did you choose to use the HCS product?

I chose this type of implant for several reasons: the material it's made from (titanium), the highly precise instrumentation used with it, and its very low — almost nonexistent — failure rate.

How easy is this implant to use?

It's extremely easy to use — you simply need to follow the steps of the surgical technique.

Over time, using this implant technique becomes almost second nature.

How do patients adapt after a procedure using the HCS implant?

Personally, I haven't had any complications with this implant.

The HCS implant was manufactured by DePuy Synthes and distributed in Romania by Ronda Medical. For more than 15 years, Ronda Medical has been supplying the latest surgical techniques and implants, while also giving clients access to templates to help select the most suitable system for each patient.

The HCS implant is used for both intra-articular and extra-articular fractures, as well as for fixing small bone fragments, small joint arthrodesis, and the treatment of hallux valgus. One advantage of this system is that it consists of headless compression screws — buried within the bone tissue — available in diameters of 4.5 mm and 6.5 mm, as well as 2.4 mm and 3 mm. Using these implants, the surgeon can adjust the degree of compression at the fracture site.
