MUTARS® Proximal Femur
Modular megaprosthesis for proximal femoral replacement — in tumors or major bone defects, including hip arthroplasty (hemi or total).

MUTARS® Proximal Femur is the component of the modular MUTARS® system (Implantcast) for proximal femoral reconstruction following tumor resection or in other major bone defects. It allows replacement of the hip joint either as hemiarthroplasty or as total arthroplasty, in combination with the acetabular components.
The proximal femoral component is available in two lengths (50 and 70 mm), with a 12/14 taper and retention rings for soft-tissue fixation. A revision variant is also available, with a selectable CCD angle (127° or 135°). The intramedullary stem has a hexagonal cross-section for optimal fixation, in an uncemented version (titanium alloy, microporous surface, optionally with a hydroxyapatite coating) or a cemented version (CoCrMo).
The implant length is adjusted intraoperatively with extension pieces in 20 mm increments. Soft-tissue reattachment is performed with the MUTARS® attachment tube (made of PET), which reduces the likelihood of hip dislocation. The system was developed at the University Hospital of Münster and has been in clinical use since 1992.
- Tumors of the proximal femur or other major bone defects.
- Hip arthroplasty (hemiarthroplasty or total arthroplasty) in proximal femoral reconstruction.
- Reconstruction following tumor resection or after removal of a prosthesis (infected or non-infected).
Modular
Preconfigured components, adjustable intraoperatively to the length and anatomy of each case.
Hexagonal stem
Hexagonal cross-section for optimal intramedullary fixation; cemented and uncemented variants (± HA).
Rotational adjustment
Toothed connections that allow adjustment of the rotation/anteversion angle in 5° steps.
Soft-tissue reattachment
MUTARS® attachment tube (PET) that reduces the risk of hip dislocation.
